Pattern Exhaustion

Challenge #7: Cat Video

Performance for Solo Artist (photo credit: Cynthia Tran)

Synopsis

[Pattern Exhaustion definition]

A state of creative decline. Derived from archaeology, the term in its strictest sense describes excavations that over time reveal stylistic repetition rather than variation in artifacts such as pottery. In his 1948 text Anthropology, A. L. Kroeber interpreted it more liberally, arguing that "this principle seems to apply almost equally to aesthetic activities…”

Pattern Exhaustion Challenge #7: Cat Video recreates the stylistic repetitions in this well-established form as it excavates the creature comforts it affords in an anxious world.
